Since 2003 our company started providing a new service- LMDS- Local Multipoint Distribution System. This is the broadband wireless technology used to deliver voice, data, Internet, and video services in the 26 GHz and higher spectrum (depending on licensing). The following technology offers line- of-sight coverage over distances up to 3-5 kilometers. It can deliver data and telephony services to 80 000 customers from a single node. LMDS is one solution for bringing high- bandwidth services to homes and offices within the last mile of connectivity, an area where cable or optical fiber may not be convenient or economical.
As a result of the propagation characteristics of signals in this frequency range, LMDS systems use a cellular- like network architecture, though services provided are fixed, not mobile.
Nowadays for the service providers and operators there are some very important things, such as speed for transferring data, its flexibility and ability to cooperate with other providers.
Point-to-point fixed wireless networks have been commonly deployed to order high- speed dedicated links between high-density nodes in a network. Moreover, the biggest part of the cost of wireless network is not taken into account until the equipment has been installed at the client's place. The network service operator can make the capital investment during a long period of time while connecting the new customers. LMDS provides an effective last mile solution for the official service provider and can be used by competitive service providers to deliver services directly to end-users. Benefits can be summarized as follows:
- Lower entry and deployment costs
- Ease and speed of deployment (systems can be deployed rapidly with minimal damage to the community and the environment)
- Fast realization of revenue (as a result of rapid deployment)
- Demand based build out (scalable architecture employing open industry standards ensuring services and coverage areas can be easily expanded as customer demand warrants)
- Cost shift from fixed to variable components (with traditional wire line systems, most of the capital investment is in the infrastructure, while with LMDS a greater percentage of the investment is shifted to customer- premise equipment, which means an operator spends dollars only when a revenue paying customer signs on)
- Cost-effective network maintenance, management, and operating costs
